Case
study – Translation memory reduces costs
 |
Lloyd International uses Translation Memory
to save a global printer manufacturer £50,000 on translating
eight user manuals into six languages within six weeks |
The issue
Domino Printing Sciences – www.domino-printing.com/uk – is a world leader in ink jet and laser technologies for printing and coding solutions. When the company launched its new C Series printers in six key markets – France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands and Brazil – all the user documentation had to be available in the local languages as the printers were produced. This required 8 maintenance manuals, written in Adobe FrameMaker – comprising over 800 pages in total – to be translated into 6 languages, within a tight delivery schedule.
The solution
To minimise document delivery time and cost, whilst maintaining
consistency and quality, Lloyd International had to manage this
complex project as efficiently as possible, using the latest translation software and processes. Drawing on its extensive experience in managing
multi-language projects, Lloyd International decided to:
 |
Use a single mother tongue translator team for
each language to ensure consistency of style and terminology |
| |
|
 |
Develop Translation Memory with each manual
to decrease the translation word count as the project progressed |
| |
|
 |
Translate each manual consecutively to gain
maximum Translation Memory benefit |
| |
|
The benefits
The final costs were £50,000 less than the client had budgeted
and the entire project was completed in less than 6 weeks.
Domino’s global business continues to go from strength to strength. In 2003,
the company won the 'Languages for Export Large Company Award' for the Eastern
Region of the UK, run by UK Trade and Investment (formerly Trade Partners UK).
Allan Lewis, Domino’s Technical Publications Manager, comments "Our success
continues to be dependent on having a local understanding of the market and an
adaptation of the product to local needs with user interfaces and manuals in
the customer's own language."
Following the success of the project, Lloyd International has completed further
translations into Chinese, Korean and Japanese for Domino’s Asian markets and
been appointed a preferred supplier.
